Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has cautioned the Black Stars against underestimating any opponent as they prepare for their 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Ghana will first host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium in their Matchday 5 fixture before travelling to Morocco to face Madagascar at the Al Hoceima Grand Stadium on Monday, June 24.
After a disappointing run in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers—where the team failed to register a single win—Essien emphasized the need for thorough preparation and respect for every opponent.
“Yes, we can win, but we have to prepare properly because I hate hearing that the Black Stars couldn’t beat a particular team,” he told Sporty FM.
“If you’re playing against an underdog, you have to take the game seriously. They have nothing to lose, but if we lose, it becomes big news. We just have to respect our opponents and prepare well for the matches,” he added.
Ghana, seeking to secure their fifth World Cup appearance, must win both fixtures to boost their chances of progressing from Group I.
