Ghana legend, Michael Essien has slammed Jamie Carragher, describing him as naive for his anti Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) remarks.
The former Liverpool and England defender sparked controversy by suggesting that AFCON was not a “major tournament” while discussing Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
He argued that Salah’s bid for the award could be hindered because he was “not playing in a major tournament,” despite excelling for Liverpool.
However, Essien speaking on Sporty FM praised former African legends for criticizing Carragher for his unfair remarks about AFCON.
"Jamie Carragher was naïve and ignorant in his comments about AFCON and African football.
"Some of my African football have dealt with him so I am ok but he was just naïve to make those comments about African football," he added.
Days after his anti-remarks on SkySports, Carragher clarified his statement on CBS.
