Former Ghana midfielder, Alfred Duncan, has revealed that he was not given the needed respect, hence his decision to prematurely retire from the national team.
The former Inter Milan midfield enforcer, who made his Black Stars debut against Mozambique in a 2016 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, retired from national team duties in 2019.
Speaking on his decision to quit playing for the four-time African champions, Duncan explained that, “With the national team, it was complicated because it was my decision to quit because I wasn’t getting the respect I think I deserved,” he told Sporty FM.
“For a player like me, when I got to the peak of my career, I thought I deserved more respect, which I wasn’t getting enough. I think it was best to part ways in order for the young ones or the ones they thought they were right for the team to get the chance to play.”
The defensive midfielder made nine appearances for the Black Stars.
Duncan has spent almost all of his life in Italy playing for Serie A clubs such as Inter Milan, Sassuolo, Fiorentina and most recently, Venezia.
