Former Asante Kotoko captain Isaac Amoako has raised concerns over the damaging effects of hooliganism on the reputation of the Ghana Premier League, stressing that corporate sponsors will be reluctant to invest in a sport tainted by violence.
His remarks come in the wake of a tragic incident at Nana Koramansah Park during the Matchday 19 clash between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko, which resulted in the death of a Kotoko supporter.
In an interview, Amoako urged football stakeholders in Ghana to take decisive action to curb violence in the sport and uphold higher standards.
"No one enjoys investing in a product that brings this kind of thing, hooliganism. Nobody wants to associate himself with those kinds of behaviours," he told Citi Sports.
"As Ghaianans, and a football country, we should learn from certain things, we have come of age and those things should stop.
“What happened yesterday, started from the players and generated into the supporters which brought the sudden death of this young supporter,” he added.
In response, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has invoked Article 14(2) of the Premier League Regulations, imposing an immediate ban on Nsoatreman FC’s home venue.
Additionally, the GFA has called for a full investigation by the Ghana Police Service to hold those responsible accountable.
As a further measure, all Matchday 20 fixtures have been suspended.
