A covert attempt to transport a substance believed to be cocaine in a school bag was thwarted by the vigilance of officials of the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) at the Dabala Checkpoint on the Accra-Aflao road yesterday.

A 57-year-old man, Mr Kwaku Asuman, driving an Opel Vectra saloon car, with registration number ER 3880 U, was believed to be travelling towards Accra.

According to a source, the substance, weighing about one kilogramme, was identified when CEPS officials, on a regular check, called the driver who had strapped the school bag around his shoulders like a schoolchild, for a random search.

At that point the suspect, knowing what would happen, attempted to argue with the CEPS officials as to what an ordinary carrier bag could contain that should demand a search by them.

However, the officials insisted on checking the bag and, presto, they discovered the white substance in it.

The source said the suspect, together with the vehicle and the parcel, had been sent to the CEPS Sector Office at Aflao for further investigations.

It said the substance would later be sent to the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) in Accra for a forensic test.
