CAF patches up WAFU factions

The Confederation of African Football has stepped in to patch up the differences between two separate blocs within the West African Football Union – WAFU, over the right to assume the presidency.

CAF's Executive Committee on Tuesday granted a hearing to the two principal characters, Dr. Amos Adamu and Jacques Anouma involved the power struggle and after studying the apparent crisis within the West African football body decided to unify the two blocs.

The sport body after accepting the outcome of WAFU's General Assembly held in Accra in April has implemented a roadmap that would see to the transition of power from Jacques Anouma to Dr. Amos Adamu when the Ivorian's term ends in 2008.

The following decisions were taken by CAF's Executive Committee:

1. Recognized Dr. Amos Adamu as WAFU elected President following the General Assembly which took place in Accra on April 14.

2. Mr Jacques Anouma will be the President of WAFU until the end of his tenure April. 2008

3. At the end of his tenure Mr Anouma, Dr. Amos Adamu and the Executive Committee elected in April 2007 in Accra will take over their positions automatically.

The regional football body at its extra-ordinary elective general assembly in the Ghanaian capital, Accra elected FIFA and CAF member, Dr Amos Adamu as the body's new President.

Nine-member federations including Benin Republic, Niger, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Mali, Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania of the 16-member body endorsed Amos Adamu who would take over from Ivorian, Jacques Anouma.

WAFU was founded in 1977 with an annual national team and club competitions but interest diminished in the early 1990s.
