Former Ghana football legend, Ibrahim Sunday beleives the Black Stars are struggling to perform due to a lack of planning.
The senior national team has struggled to make an impact at major tournaments. Under the guidance of Milovan Rajevac, the team suffered a group phase elimination at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar under Otto Addo as interim coach, the Black Stars suffered another group phase exit before recording their third group stage exit during the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast under Chris Hughton.
However, the four-time African champions failed to book a qualification for the 2025 AFCON tournament scheduled to be hosted in Morocco after finishing at the bottom of Group F with three points after six games in the recently concluded qualifiers.
Speaking to Asempa FM in an interview, the 1971 African Footballer of the Year criticized the country’s approach to team management, highlighting its failure to groom quality replacements during the team’s peak years.
“When the team was performing well, we did not look for quality players to replace. We did not prepare for our future, and that is why we are struggling now," he said.
“As a nation, we act as if we do not care,” Sunday observed. “But we need to take action and solve the problem," he added.
The Black Stars will hope to put up an improved performance when they face Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
