They have no commitment - GOC president Ben Nunoo Mensah takes swipe at Black Stars players

Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has linked the recent struggles of the Black Stars to a lack of commitment among the players.

The senior national team has faced heavy criticism following their underwhelming performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Over six matches, the Black Stars failed to secure a single win, finishing with three draws and three losses. Their disappointing campaign left them at the bottom of Group F with just three points.

This marks Ghana's first absence from the AFCON tournament in 20 years, a significant setback for the four-time African champions.

Commenting on the team’s lacklustre showing, Nunoo Mensah pointed to what he sees as a disconnection among players, particularly those who switched nationality to represent Ghana. He argued that these players lack a deep understanding of the pride and responsibility that comes with wearing the national jersey.

"I don't see the national attachment of these players, and it is because they have been brought from different places. They don't understand the jersey they are wearing," he told Asempa FM.

"These players we currently have lack commitment, and I believe that we have to go back to the basics to fix these problems," he added.

He emphasized that rebuilding the team’s sense of identity and dedication is key to overcoming the current challenges.

Looking ahead, the Black Stars will aim for redemption in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with matches against Chad and Madagascar scheduled for March 2025.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds the future of head coach Otto Addo, as the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council is yet to decide on his tenure.
