Three GPL standout players get Black Stars nod for crucial AFCON Qualifiers against Angola and Niger

In a strategic move ahead of the decisive 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Ghana’s head coach Otto Addo has included three standout Ghana Premier League players in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming matches against Angola and Niger.

The call-ups reflect Otto Addo’s ongoing effort to blend fresh, homegrown talent with established international stars as the team aims to secure a spot in next year’s tournament.

Retaining his place from the previous squad, Samartex defender Isaac Afful will once again represent the Black Stars after contributing to the team’s defense during the October clashes against Sudan. His inclusion signals continued faith in home-based players, with the addition of two new faces from the local league.

The new call-ups are Asante Kotoko midfielder Emmanuel Antwi and Nations FC defender Razak Simpson, both of whom have been standout performers in the Ghana Premier League this season. Antwi, a vital cog in Kotoko’s midfield, has been a consistent presence, featuring in every match so far and contributing a goal to help the team in their pursuit of the league title. His strong performances have made him one of the most talked-about players in the league.

Simpson, meanwhile, has been rock-solid in defense for Nations FC, playing a crucial role in their defensive solidity. With 790 minutes under his belt across nine matches, Simpson has helped his team maintain five clean sheets, propelling them to second place in the league standings. His solid defensive display has earned him a well-deserved call-up to the national team.

These three players bring added depth and versatility to the Black Stars as the team prepares for two crucial qualifiers. Ghana faces Angola on November 15, followed by a clash with Niger three days later, in a pair of must-win matches.

To secure their qualification, the Black Stars will need not only to secure victories in these games but also to hope for Sudan to slip up in their own fixtures.
