Cup of Nations 2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Jordan Ayew to captain Black Stars for final games against Angola and Niger - Reports
TUE, 05 NOV 2024

Leicester City striker Jordan Ayew is set to captain the Black Stars for their crucial final matches in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

During the third and fourth matchdays against Sudan, Mohammed Kudus was appointed as captain after Thomas Partey was unavailable.

However, Ghana faced disappointment, drawing the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium and then suffering a 2-0 defeat in the second leg against Kwesi Appiah’s Sudanese side in Libya.

Otto Addo, the head coach, faced significant criticism for not selecting Ayew, a key player for the team, as captain.

Following these setbacks, reports from local media indicate that Addo has since met with Ayew to resolve any differences, and he is now expected to lead the squad for the upcoming matches.

Ghana has struggled in the qualifiers, remaining winless after four matches. They lost 1-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium and drew 1-1 with Niger in Berkane. Currently, the Black Stars sit third in Group F with just two points, trailing behind both Angola and Sudan.

As they prepare to face Angola in Luanda on November 15, followed by a home game against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later, Ghana aims to turn their fortunes around and secure qualification for the tournament in Morocco.
