Hockey Will Be There

The Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) has expressed regret at a publication in yesterday's Daily Graphic which sought to suggest that Ghana will not participate in hockey at this year's All African Games becuase the sport did not meet the criterion for qualification.

The story which quoted the Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC), Prince Oduro-Mensah, said according to the rules if less than five countries entered for a sport, that sport would not be featured at the games.

A statement issued yesterday said the hockey segment of the Games had been moved to Nairobi, Kenya, because Algeria has no hockey pitch.

It said Ghana, Nigeria, defending Champions, South Africa, Egypt, Namibia and host Kenya were among some of the countries scheduled to participate in the competition which also served as the Beijing Olympic qualifier.

The statement said the list presented by the NSC were disciplines that would be staged in Algeria.

It said it would be wrong for any one to suggest that the hockey team would not be part of the games simply because the team will be travelling to Algeria.

Hockey officials are liaising with the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports to raise money to send the team on a training tour of Holland in June ahead of the July competition.
