2025 AFCON Qualifiers: Ghana deserves a better pitch, says Angola coach Pedro Goncalves

Angola head coach, Pedro Goncalves has expressed his disappointment over the current condition of the Baba Yara Stadium pitch.

The Portuguese trainer made these remarks following his team’s hard-fought 1-0 victory against Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers opener on Thursday.

Goncalves, whose team struggled along with Ghana to adapt to the poor playing surface, voiced his concerns after the match, stating, “A country like Ghana deserves a better pitch.”

The state of the pitch has been a point of contention ahead of the game.

Despite dominating the game, a late mistake by Ghana defender Abdul Mumin led to Angoal scoring to snatch the three points.

Angola will now prepare for their next qualifier against Sudan, who secured a win over Niger, while Ghana will look to bounce back in their upcoming clash against Niger.

It remains unknown if the Black Stars will continue to play their home games at the Baba Yara Stadium.
