SAT, 31 AUG 2024 LISTEN

FC Basel defender Jonas Adjetey Adjei has been called up to Ghana's squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, replacing the injured Alexander Djiku.

Djiku suffered a thigh injury on Friday during a league match for Fenerbahce, prompting coach Otto Addo to make the substitution in the squad.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that the 20-year-old Adjetey will step in for Djiku. This will be Adjetey's first appearance with the Black Stars as they gear up for important matches against Angola and Niger.

Adjetey, who has been making a name for himself in the Swiss Super League, began his football journey at Teshie Football Academy. He later played for Accra Great Olympics and Berekum Chelsea before joining FC Basel.

So far this season, Adjetey has been a consistent presence for Basel, playing in all six of their Swiss Super League matches.

The young defender is expected to join the Black Stars' camp on Monday to start preparations for the qualifiers.

Ghana is set to play Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on September 5, followed by a trip to Berkane, Morocco, to face Niger on September 9.
