Football followers in Ghana can now follow more closely global sporting events, particularly major football competitions live through their cellular phones in a manner that overcome the challenges of other media such as radio and television.

Since last Saturday cellular operators, tiGO, rolled out a new service that enables its subscribers to enjoy live updates of the big football leagues in Europe such as the English Premiership, Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga, French Ligue 1, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup, among others, via SMS as the games happen.

For the next two weeks until April 12, the cellular operators are offering the LiveScore free to its subscribers after which interested tiGO customers would be required to pay a monthly charge of ¢5,000 to enjoy the service.

Subscribers of the network must first send an SMS text message to short code 406 after which they will receive confirmation message and indicate from a list of events or matches live updates they wish to receive when the games take place.

At the launch of tiGO's latest innovation last Friday, Mr Ransford Nyarko, Marketing Manager of Millicom Ghana Limited, said tiGO LiveScore would concentrate more on football since it represented the passion of Ghanaians, but would cover other major disciplines like boxing or track and field events in which Ghanaians participated.
