The Ghana Paralympic Committee (GPC) has clarified that the national amputee team did not use self-purchased jerseys for the recent Amputee African Cup of Nations (AAFCON) tournament in Egypt as was previously reported.
In a recent interview, the coach of Ghana's amputee national team stated that he bought jerseys from the Kantamanto market in Accra to kit the team for the amputee AFCON tournament in Egypt where Ghana successfully defended their title.
However, in a new statement, Samuel Deen, President of the Ghana Paralympic Committee denied that claim.
According to Deen, the jerseys bought from Kantamanto were only meant for the team's local training and matches prior to travelling for the tournament, not for the actual AFCON competition in Egypt.
"Yes, they bought some jerseys, but they were meant for their training and matches before travelling to Egypt for the AFCON. The Ghana Football Association has always been up and ready to supply the team with kitting. Before they embarked on the trip to Egypt, the GFA made provision for the team to be able to have the fullest of kits," Deen explained.
He added that upon being contacted about the coach's earlier comments, the coach acknowledged being corrected by a team official that the GFA had indeed provided full kitting for the tournament in Egypt as it has always done.
"When I raised the issue with the coach this morning, upon receipt of information in the media, I quickly engaged the coach, and he explained that after he had granted that interview, an officer with the Welfare Department of the team called and made corrections to that, and he is going to make sure that this error is corrected," Deen stated.
