Athletic Bilbao forward, Inaki Williams is eagerly anticipating what he describes as a dream opportunity as his team gets ready to clash with RCD Mallorca in the Copa del Rey final.
Set to unfold on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the Estadio de La Cartuja at 20:00 GMT, the final is highly anticipated and promises a fierce showdown between the two sides.
Expressing his determination, Williams stressed the significance of clinching the Copa del Rey title, recognizing its potential to carve a place in the club’s history. Athletic Bilbao has its sights set on securing the prestigious trophy for the first time since 1984.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Williams articulated his emotions, stating, “I always say, my parents have done so much for us. Everything we do is to give back to them for everything they have done for us. Hopefully, we can bring that victory, not only to them but to all the generations of Athleticzales who have not seen an Athletic champion."
“Hopefully, we can enjoy a great final," he added. "It’s a dream we’ve had since childhood. We’ve grown up playing together, we’re still playing together and now we have the chance to play the first cup final together. Things didn’t go the way we all wanted last year. Once again we can enjoy a final. We don’t want to imagine, we want to do it.”
Reflecting on previous disappointments, notably in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons where they fell short in the final stages losing to Real Sociedad and Barcelona respectively, Williams and his teammates are determined to rewrite history this time by overcoming RCD Mallorca and putting an end to the 40-year-old drought.
With Williams showcasing excellent form this season, having already scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, the 29-year-old is poised to play a pivotal role in Bilbao’s quest for victory.
His contributions in the Copa del Rey, including two goals and two assists, further underline his importance to the team’s aspirations.
