Southampton's manager Russell Martin emphasized the importance of Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana maintaining his fitness to unlock his immense potential.

Following Southampton's 3-0 defeat against Liverpool in the FA Cup's fifth round, where they missed out on a quarterfinal clash with Manchester United, Martin reflected on Sulemana's performance, particularly his missed opportunities in the first half.

Addressing Sulemana's injury history, which has plagued his career since joining from Stade Rennes, Martin highlighted the necessity for the young player to stay fit to reach his peak.

"It’s now about staying fit in order for him to get to the level he is capable of. He is a young guy who is learning all the time and will be an important player for us," Martin conveyed to the Daily Echo.

Expressing empathy for Sulemana's frustrations with injuries disrupting his progress, Martin acknowledged the stop-start nature of his development.

"I think he is a little frustrated that he has had injuries, then got into a flow and then had to come out with injuries again,” he added.

Despite his struggles, Sulemana is yet to find the back of the net for Southampton this season, hindered by ongoing injury setbacks that also saw him miss the 2023 AFCON tournament with Ghana.
