President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed deep sadness over Ghana's disappointing performance at the recently concluded 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament held in Ivory Coast.
Ghana, who were chasing their fifth continental title got bundled out of the tournament after finishing bottom in their group with two points.
The entire country was left disappointed and dismayed over the team's abysmal performance at the 34th edition of the AFCON tournament.
However, addressing the nation, President Akufo Addo reflected on Ghana's AFCON campaign, acknowledging the collective disappointment felt by the citizens.
"The recent AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire was probably the nadir of the performance of the Black Stars, and has left the nation saddened," he said.
"However, I am quite certain that the young men and the technical handlers would, themselves, have wanted to make our nation proud, and I believe that the captain, Andre Dede Ayew, meant every word when he rendered heartfelt apologies on behalf of his team-mates to all Ghanaians for the team’s early exit," he added.
The Black Stars will regroup in June for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a doubleheader against Mali.
