In the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Black Stars of Ghana have landed in the 18th position, marking a disappointing outcome for the West African nation.
Among the 24 competing teams, Ghana had aspired to secure its fifth championship title but faced an early departure from the tournament during the group phase.
Despite being part of a competitive lineup, Ghana's journey came to an abrupt halt after clinching the third spot in Group B, with a mere two points to its name. The team suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat against Cape Verde and settled for 2-2 draws against both Egypt and Mozambique, sealing their exit from the competition at the preliminary stage.
Throughout the tournament, Ghana managed to net five goals but conceded six, with the heartbreaking moment occurring when Mozambique found the net twice during added time, denying Ghana the opportunity to progress further.
This recent elimination marks Ghana's second consecutive departure at the group stage, underscoring the challenges faced by the team in recent AFCON editions. With no victories to their credit in this edition, the Black Stars ended their campaign in the 18th spot among the 24 participating teams.
In contrast, Ivory Coast clinched the championship title for the third time and has been positioned as the top-ranked team in the final standings. Following them closely are Nigeria, South Africa, and DR Congo, securing the second, third, and fourth positions respectively in the tournament.
