Ivory Coast, the reigning champions of Africa, have secured a substantial $7 million prize for triumphing in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
In a thrilling final held at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé on Sunday night, Ivory Coast, also known as the Elephants, overcame a one-goal deficit to clinch a 2-1 victory against Nigeria, earning them their third AFCON title.
William Troost-Ekong, leading the Super Eagles, scored the opening goal, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead at halftime. However, Ivory Coast turned the tide in the second half with goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller, securing the coveted win.
This historic triumph marked the first time Ivory Coast has lifted the AFCON trophy, earning them the gold medal and the increased prize money announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) before the tournament.
Under this revised prize scheme, Nigeria, as the runners-up, will receive $4 million in addition to their silver medal.
Although Nigeria entered the final with hopes of claiming their fourth AFCON title, they ultimately fell short, experiencing disappointment at the game's conclusion.
Other teams also received significant prize money: South Africa and DR Congo, who secured third and fourth places respectively, will each receive $2.5 million. Quarterfinalists received $1.3 million each as they exited the competition.
