Jeremie Frimpong, the Dutch-born Ghanaian right-back playing for Bayer Leverkusen, has turned down an invitation to participate in the EURO U21 championship.

This decision comes after being overlooked by Ronald Koeman, the coach of the Netherlands national team, for the upcoming Nations League matches scheduled for June.

Despite the disappointment of not being selected for the senior squad, the 22-year-old Frimpong was subsequently included in the U21 team for the European championship.

However, he has chosen not to join the squad for the tournament, as confirmed by Netherlands U21 coach Edwin van de Looi.

Speaking about Frimpong's absence from the U21 selection, coach Edwin van de Looi expressed his regret, stating, "The most notable absentee from our selection is Jeremie Frimpong. After not being selected for the Dutch national team, he chose not to make himself available for the Dutch Juniors.

He continued, “This is, of course, a pity for us, but I also think that without Frimpong, we would have a good selection for the European Championship."

Frimpong's decision to decline the U21 call-up now leaves the opportunity open for Ghana to extend an invitation to the talented defender, potentially granting him the chance to represent the Black Stars on the international stage.

Previously, Frimpong was part of the Dutch team that competed in the World Cup held in Qatar.

However, he did not make an appearance on the field as the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals.
