African goals in Europe: 27-28 Jan

Spain

Mali international Freddie Kanoute produced an impressive performance as one of the many African players that shone again in Europe.

Kanoute, back to his best form, struck after a quick counter-attack by his Sevilla side as they won 4-2 at Levante to maintain the pressure on leaders Barcelona in the Primera Liga.

It was his 16th goal of the season and left Sevilla just one point behind the Catalans.

England

Ivorian Kolo Toure rescued a 1-1 draw for English Premier League side Arsenal in their FA Cup fourth round tie against Bolton Wanderers with a late headed equaliser.

The teams will replay at Bolton on 14 February after the Ivorian defender scored with an athletic diving header that bounced over goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen with 12 minutes remaining.

Two more Africans were on the scoresheet at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea beat third division Nottingham Forest 3-0 to advance to the fifth round.

Ivorian captain Didier Drogba scored with a tremendous 25-metre free-kick, his 22nd goal of the season and Nigerian Jon Obi Mikel added a third from close range.

South African Benni McCarthy was another African to add to his goal tally when he scored the second goal in Blackburn Rovers's impressive 4-0 win at second division strugglers Luton.

Nigerian Nwankwo Kanu kept up his impressive form this season for Portsmouth in their tie at Manchester United, but unfortunately for him and his team it was merely a consolation goal.

He notched his 11th this season with a deflection, but it came too late to stop United winning 2-1.

Egyptian striker Mido celebrated his return to the Tottenham Hotspur starting line-up with a goal in their 3-1 victory over Southend.

The 23-year-old striker cleverly flicked in a cross from England international Aaron Lennon for his fifth goal of the season to complete the scoring.

France

Racing Lens captain Keita scored two second-half goals in an impressive comeback as Lens overturned a 3-0 defecit to snatch a draw with St Etienne.

Keita's two strikes left Lens third in the standings, one point behind Lille.

Ivorian Bakari Kone scored with a curling shot from 18 metres as struggling Nice surprisingly held league leaders Olympique Lyon to a 1-1 draw.

Lyon's new signing Milan Baros earned Lyon a point.

Ivorian Kanga Akale helped Auxerre to a 2-0 victory over Nancy, his sixth goal of the season coming when he headed in a free-kick from former Liverpool midfielder Benoit Cheyrou.

It was not such a good weekend for Moroccan Marouane Chamakh. He scored in his own net as Girondins Bordeaux lost at home to Lille by the only goal.

Netherlands

Ghanaian striker Kwame Quansah grabbed a consolation goal as Heracles Almelo were thrashed 5-1 by Heerenveen.

The result leaves Quansah's side in 14th place in the standings.

Scotland

Moroccan Abdessalam Benjelloun scored the second goal in Hibernian's 2-0 win over Motherwell as Hibs moved up to fifth spot.
