Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday, but the surprise omission of captain Andre Ayew raised eyebrows among fans and pundits.

Head coach Chris Hughton defended his decision to leave the experienced midfielder on the bench, saying it was a difficult choice that comes with the job.

“You know the quality that Andre has, you also know the quality that I like to think the squad have. So these are very difficult decisions for me; certainly nothing to read into that. He is, has been and is still a very good player, it was just my choice,” Hughton told the media after the game.

The Black Stars struggled to break through a resolute Angolan defense until substitute Antoine Semeneyo scored a last-gasp winner in the dying minutes of the match.

Ghana will face Angola again in the reverse fixture on Monday, March 27 in Luanda, and Hughton will be hoping his players can replicate their winning performance to secure another crucial three points.
