The first round of the 2006/07 premiership season ended last weekend for fourteen clubs as two other teams clear their outstanding game on the last day of the year.
Match-day-15 produced two drawn games with six wins across the country side with Accra Hearts of Oak being the biggest winners on Christmas eve after they beat archrivals, Asante Kotoko. However, Power FC could not leave the bottom of the table as they still prop the sixteen-club table.
The Phobians with a game in hand managed to reduce Kotoko’s four-point gap to one ahead of their outstanding game with Tema Youth on Sunday.
Accra Great Olympics and Tema Youth kicked off the weekend’s last round of matches on Saturday at the Ho sports stadium where the game ended goalless.
But on that Christmas eve, the script was re-written at the Robert Mensah stadium as the biggest game on the premiership’s calendar ended in favour of Hearts of Oak.
With less than eight minutes to end the clash between the country’s two biggest rivals, substitute, Stanley Afedzie handed the Phobians a big Christmas present as he tapped the ball into an empty post to win the day for Hearts of Oak.
At Gyandu, Sekondi Hasaacas lived up to their pre-match hype of beating AshantiGold as the Giants of the West recorded a 3-2 win over the Miners at the Gyandu park on the final day of the premiership’s first round.
Two goals within a ten-minute spell from the boots of Samuel Inkoom and Frederick Quayeson put the home side in the driving seat.
The second half saw the Miners lift their game and pulled one back after a Hasaacas defender, Eric Owusu, conceded an own goal to make the scoreline 2-1.
But Hasaacas shot ahead again through Isaac Donkor before Alex Asamoah got a late consolation for the Miners and thus increased his tally to eight goals on the goal chart.
Bofoakwa Tano failed to pick the maximum points from the Sunyani Coronation park where they drew 1-1 with Heart of Lions.
