Germany's plan to succeed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup suffered a setback on Wednesday, November 23, when they lost 2-1 to Japan in Group E.

The victory recorded by way of a comeback has shocked many and becomes one of the surprise results seen at the World Cup since the tournament started on Sunday.

In the game today, Germany led at halftime thanks to a penalty kick converted by Manchester City midfielder İlkay Gündoğan in the 33rd minute.

While the Germans thought it will be smooth sailing in the second half, Japan found their mojo in the final 15 minutes of the contest and snatched the win from the opponent.

Thanks to goals from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano in the 75th and 83rd minutes respectively, Japan has managed to amass the maximum three points to go top of the Group E standings temporarily.

This is the first time Japan have won a World Cup match in which they conceded first.

Meanwhile, the defeat has only exposed the decline of the German national team in the last 18 months.

Spain and Costa Rica will be locking horns at 16:00GMT in the other Group E match scheduled to be played today.
