The 2022 FIFA World Cup has officially commenced in Qatar today, Sunday, November 20.

The tournament has kicked off with host nation Qatar suffering a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador in the opening match of the tournament.

The result means that Qatar has become the first host nation ever to lose its opening game of the World Cup.

Throughout the match, Ecuador dominated play as captain Enner Valencia starred for his country.

The forward scored from the spot in the 16th minute to give his country a deserved lead after his early goal in the 3rd minute was disallowed due to an offside in the build-up.

Later in the 31st minute, the experienced attacker scored with a towering header to double the lead for Ecuador.

That goal sealed a 2-0 win for the country to ensure the three points were bagged.

Qatar after today’s disappointment will be hoping for a positive result on Friday when the hosts take on Senegal in the second match in Group A.

For Ecuador, the national team must now prepare for a tough contest against the Netherlands in the next game.
