ACTIVITIES AND RESULTS SO FAR FROM THE 19TH GUSA GAMES

The 19th Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games kicked off yesterday. The games formally opened with a very colourful ceremony that was graced by dignitaries including:

Mrs Elizabeth Ohene, Minister in Charge of Tertiary Education Prof. Jophus Anamuah-Mensah (Vice Chancellor, University of Education, Winneba) Prof. C. N. B. Tagoe (Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Ghana, Legon) Rev. Prof. Addo Obeng (Vice Chancellor, University of Cape Coast) Mrs. Quarshie Sam (Registrar, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi)

After the opening ceremony which was characterized by a rich mixture of various Ghanaian dances, a fancy dress display with a number of people standing on tall stilts and walking and exhibiting various antics, as well as speeches by dignitaries tracing the history and importance of the GUSA Games, the day was rounded off with keenly competed 1,500 metre races, first by the women, and afterwards by the men.

The women's 1,500m race was won by a competitor from KNUST with a time of 5 min. 22 sec. Vida Tutu of University of Education, Winneba was second. The third place was taken by another competitor from University of Education, Winneba.

The keenly contested 1,500m men's race was won by KNUST's Prosper Agage who broke the game's record of 4 min. 11 sec. by making a time of 4 min 9 sec. The second position was taken by a competitor from UCC with a time of 4min 14 sec. Whilst another competitor from KNUST was third with a time of 4 min. 16 sec.

Earlier in the day [before the Opening Ceremony], there had been a number of matches involving the various competing teams. Results of the games/matches that have been played so far are:
