The Black Star is currently the hottest “topic in the town” at the moment because of their excellent performance and their “one foot in the door” in Germany perception; one more match win gets them a ticket for their historical inclusion at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The hotter they get the more sponsorships will flood in. With the flood of sponsorship comes the elevation of the power players; FA and the Ministry of Sports and Education and other agents playing their part. Since the all the players will not be on the negotiation table, every negotiation is entrusted into these power players.
We encourage them to incorporate ethics in their dealings, what is in the best interest of the national team and Ghana as a whole. The article; FA to name new kit sponsor soon as Ghanaweb, (Sept 9) reported, where it cited ;The Ghana Football Association is close to naming an apparel sponsor for the country's national football teams. Among the leading kit manufacturers including Puma, Adidas, Asics, Pony and Umbro which the FA is assessing their proposals. Assessing these proposals must not be political as to which manufacturer offers the best percentage behind close doors. The issue of corruption has always come into play in these types of negotiations because it becomes a jackpot for those on the negotiation table (how much percentage they can get away with). Some power players might always consider what is in it for their pockets and not the interest of the team. What is interesting is that Puma is cited as having recently signed a two-year contract with Togo to join Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, Senegal and Tunisia who are all signed to the German company.
If the Black Star demands fits PUMA's proposal, so be it and if they also fit Umbros, Adidas, Asics and others' proposals, so be it but the power players on the negotiation table must not let greed, self centeredness, corruption and politics be the order of the day because whatever happens will eventually surface. The era of positive change chapter two must be upheld and not bring the name of our country to a disrepute.
