Polytechnics Games open in Sunyani

Sunyani (B/A), May 11, GNA - The 20th edition of the Polytechnics Games began in Sunyani on Monday with about 200 participants made up of athletes and officials.

The participants at the eight-day competition will engage in soccer, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton and athletics. In the men's opening soccer matches, Sunyani Polytechnic held defending champions, Cape Coast Polytechnic to a pulsating 2-2 drawn game whilst Koforidua Polytechnic beat their Kumasi counterparts 1-0. In the men's volleyball encounter, Takoradi won 2-1 over Cape Coast with 25-23, 21-25 and 25-14 scores.

Ho Polytechnic bowed 1-2 to Sunyani with scores of 21-25, 25-23 and 18-25 whilst Kumasi emerged two-game winners over Koforidua scoring 25-17 and 25-10 with Accra Poly also beating Takoradi 2-1, with the scores at 27-25, 20-25 and 25-15.

In the women's volleyball, Takoradi defeated Cape Coast 2-1, whilst Accra lost 1-2 to Tamale.

In the women's soccer Ho Poly chalked a 2-0 win over Takoradi whilst Sunyani defeated Cape Coast 2-0, Kumasi beat Koforidua 2-1 while Tamale Poly thrashed their Wa Poly counterparts 2-0.

Dr. Kwasi Nsiah-Gyabaah, Principal of Sunyani Poly in a welcoming address complained about the inadequate allocations from the GETFUND for the Ghana Polytechnics Sports Association to run the games. He therefore appealed to individuals and NGOs to assist the Association to enable it contribute to the unearthing and talents hunt in sports. Professor E.K. Agyei, Chairman of Polytechnics Council, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri, Omanhene of Sunyani Traditional Area and Mrs. Akua Akubour Debrah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of Ghana Education Service graced the opening ceremony.

The Coronation Park, Sunyani Secondary School, Sunyani Polytechnic and School of Renewable Natural Resources are the selected games villages.
