Cup of Nations 2023 AFCONQ: Asamoah Gyan backs Afena-Gyan after Black Stars' 1-1 draw with CAR

Asamoah Gyan has backed new Black Stars striker, Felix Afena-Gyan after the youngster came under attack following his performance against the Central African Republic [CAR] in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers on Sunday.

The AS Roma forward scored his debut goal for the country against Madagascar in the opener of the qualifiers last week Wednesday at the Cape Coast Stadium.

But the youngster – tipped to take up the shoes of the legendary striker – is beginning to come under the cosh especially after failing to impress in his latest outing – the 1-1 draw away to CAR.

Offering his observation under a Twitter trend topic on the youngster’s performance, Asamoah Gyan posted:

“He [Felix Afena-Gyan] is doing some good things up front.

“His hold-up play is not bad. All the team needs to do is to have confidence in him and supply the balls anytime he makes a run through channels.”

“Striker gives up when he runs a lot and there there is no supply. Midfielders have to take risks,” he added.

The 19-year-old made his international debut at any level just about some three months ago – in the crucial Fifa World Cup playoffs against Nigeria.

Afena-Gyan is in line to make it to the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar in November.
