2006 World Cup: I knew I would score against Czech Republic - Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan says he was very confident of scoring against the Czech Republic in the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Having suffered a 2-0 defeat to Italy in their opener, Ghana played their second group game against the Czech.

However, the West African country recorded a 2-0 win over the Czech, who were then world number four on the FIFA rankings.

Gyan speaking in an interview revealed that he was sure of finding the back of the net.

According to him, he wanted to make history and, as it was Ghana’s first appearance at a World Cup, scoring a goal would certainly achieve that.

“I was very confident. I knew something was going to happen. Back home in Ghana, everyone was praying for us,” Gyan said in an interview with Asaase FM.

“I said to myself that I needed to make history. If I scored, I would make history," he added.

Gyan remains Africa's highest goal scorer in the history of the World Cup and Ghana's all-time top goal scorer with 51 goals.

The Black Stars would eventually make it out of their group, losing to then-defending world champions, Brazil.
