Kumasi, Sept 27, GNA - Freeman Bongo scored 30 points to win a 30 metre-catapult shooting competition among three other traditional games in a competition organised by the Ashanti Regional offices of the Ghana Tourist Board (GTB) as part of activities marking the World Tourism Day celebration held in Kumasi at the weekend.
The other games competed for were Draught, 'Oware' and 'Ampe'. Bongo took home a standing fan and a certificate as his prize while Jack Chang scored 20 points to take the second position in the competition and collected a radio cassette recorder and a certificate. Johnson Owusu placed third with 15 points and had a wall clock and a certificate.
The theme for the celebration was: "Sports and Tourism -Two Driving Forces for Mutual Understanding and Development of Societies". Mr Kofi Amponsah won the draught competition with Mr Obeng Afriyie coming second and Opanin Kwabena Duku placing third.
They received standing fans, radio cassette recorders, wall clocks and certificates.
Bebeto Obodae won the 'Oware' competition followed by Solomon Nyamekye with James Opoku taking the third position.
They also took home standing fans, radio cassette recorders, wall clocks and certificates.
Comfort Addo won the 'Ampe' competition and was presented with a food container and a certificate while Agatha Afriyie received a Drink Jar and a certificate for placing second with Vida Ayaba receiving a wall clock and a certificate for coming third.
Mr Benjamin Anane-Nsiah, Ashanti Regional Manager of the GTB, commended the participants for exhibiting good sportsmanship and ensuring the success of the competition.
He said the celebration was aimed at promoting world tourism and national integration.
The Regional Manager said there was the need for the people in the society to help in the promotion and development of tourism in order to break down social and economic barriers.
Mr Anane-Nsiah said he hoped that other organisations and youth associations would help revive traditional games not only to promote tourism but also create national unity and development.
