Ghana gears up for world cup eliminator
Accra, July 30, GNA - The National Volleyball team, the Black Spikkers will on August 9, begin camping for a World Cup eliminator tournament scheduled for Sudan in September.
The winner of the four-nation tourney will join three other countries to engage in another mini tournament from which, the best two will qualify to take part in the Volleyball World Cup slated for Japan, in February, 2004.
The world volleyball governing body is yet to fix a date for the tourney in Sudan but Mr Erasmus Adorko General Secretary of the Ghana Volleyball Association (GVA) told the GNA Sports that the association deemed it expedient to start preparation in order to win the tourney. Ghana is expected to participate in the tourney along side, the host Sudan, Eritrea and Uganda to compete for the single slot.
Mr Adorkor revealed that the selected players also include the nations' youth players who will also use the opportunity to prepare for the Africa Youth Championship in South Africa in November. The General Secretary stated that a date is yet to be fixed for the South African championship.
Among the invited players are Seidu Baba, Wise Adzoka, Enoch Asamoah, William Akakpo, Kenneth Baka and Winfred Dzrekey from the Police Service with Evans Lonmotey-Tagoe, Abdallah Osman, Charles Coleman, Sylvester Seshie, Maos Bediako and Alex Adams of the Ghana Armed Forces and Ofei Awuku joining the team from the Fire Service.
Emmanuel Quinoo, Andy Swaniker, Francis Amenuveku Enoch Addoduaye are from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) with Abass Ayinga, Rahman Danladi and William Klu coming from Prisons Service, Tamale Polytechnic and University of Cape Coast respectively.
Others rest are Urkkashart Shaibu, Peter Tawiah Andoh, Eden Chapunor, and Bismark Anim from VALCO, whilst Seidu Ajanaku and Shamsu Awudu were drawn from California Baptist University, USA. The rest are Jordan Agbevanu - Western Region, and Casmir Agbenyegah of Zamalek club of Egypt.
