A resilient performance from Morocco has seen the side defeating Ghana 1-0 in the opening Group C match of the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Nicknamed the Black Stars, the West African side is in Cameroon to try and end a 40-year AFCON title drought that dates back to 1982.

Today at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Ghana locked horns with Morocco booming with confidence to start the tournament on a good note.

Unfortunately, the team could not write the intended script with the Atlas Lions of Morocco proving to be too strong an opponent.

Late in the second half in the 83rd minute, the inability of the Ghana defense to clear a loose ball saw Thomas Partey presenting Morocco attacker Sofiane Boufal with a glorious opportunity.

The forward made no mistake as he fired an unstoppable shot into the Ghana net to break the deadlock of the game.

With the Moroccan side defending and playing very well after taking the lead, the team managed to see off Ghana as the Black Stars were left in the dark at the end of the 90 minutes.

The win gives Morocco a huge advantage in Group C with Ghana now required to fight to win the two remaining matches in the group against Gabon and Comoros.
