World Cup 2022 WCQ: Egypt qualify for play-offs; Algeria now unbeaten in 32 matches!
NOV 13, 2021 LISTEN

Egypt became the fourth African nation to qualify for the play-offs on Friday, joining Mali, Morocco and Senegal in the third and final round.

It proved a fruitful day at the office for north African nations in CAF second round 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifying action, on Friday 12 November.

Algeria kicked off the day's action with a 4-0 thumping of Djibouti at Cairo International Stadium.

Victory extended the Fennec Foxes' remarkable unbeaten run to 32 matches and moved them two points clear atop Group A, after group rivals Burkina Faso could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Niger.

As a result, a draw against the Stallions in Blida next week, in the final round of group stage fixtures, would be enough for the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions to book their spot in the third round of qualifying at Burkina Faso's expense.

Youcef Belaïli, Sofiane Feghouli, Saïd Benrahma and Islam Slimani were all on target for Algeria with the latter stretching his lead atop the scoring charts; with a seventh of the qualifying campaign.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the penalty spot to lead Gabon to a narrow 1-0 win over Libya, but it mattered little as Egypt confirmed themselves as Group F winners later in the day with a 2-2 draw in Luanda.

Angola were in control after 36 minutes at the Estádio 11 de Novembro following goals from Helder Costa and M'bala Nzola. Mohamed Elneny halved the deficit on the cusp of halftime before Akram Tawfik's equaliser on the hour mark to earn the Pharaohs the point they needed, in pursuit of qualification for Qatar 2022.

Elsewhere, Morocco made it five wins from five in Group I with a 3-0 win over Sudan. Ryan Mmaee netted a brace for the Atlas Lions. Guinea and Guinea-Bissau played out to a 1-1 draw in the same group.
