Mr Peter Annan, a former national tennis star and coach of the national tennis team, the Golden Rackets, has presented a number of used tennis equipment worth over 50 million cedis to the Ghana Tennis Association in Accra on Tuesday.

The items included 150 rackets, five nets and 300 pieces of tennis balls. Mr Annan who dominated the tennis scene for 10 years before Frank Ofori took over said he won the 2001 fair play award at the yearly Dusseldorf Neuss tennis championships; and instead of taking the prize money, he pleaded with the organisers to convert it into used equipment for the Ghana Tennis Association.

He has been competing in the Championship for the past 20 years. Annan who also won the SWAG best tennis player of the year award for five years running - from 1978 to 1982 - called on the Youth and Sports Minister,

Edward Osei-Kwaku, to ensure that those who import sports equipment in aid of the associations should be exempted from tax. He said he had to pay duties at the port before the items could be cleared which to him, was not encouraging. Dr Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah expressed the hope that the items would aid young Ghanaian tennis players to prepare well for ITF circuit tournaments.
