KN Owusu Hockey Tournament to Lift the Spirits of Sports Fans

Against the backdrop of the inability of Fabulous Kumasi Asante Kotoko to lift the Mandela Cup over the weekend, it is heavily anticipated that soccer fans in particular and sports fans in general will look forward to the week with a heavy heart.

Hockey is however set to provide the desired tonic for overcoming the national grief come Wednesday, December 11, 2002 when the prestigious SSB Bank/COCOBOD co-sponsored KN Owusu Memorial Invitational Tournament pushes off at 1:45pm.

Preparations are near completion for the opening ceremony, which is expected to be conducted by the Honourable Minister for Youth and Sports. According to the GHA, the planning for the entire event is progressing as scheduled and has promised a thrilling 4 days of competition.

News reaching the GHA Secretariat indicates that the contingent from Ashanti Region is due in Accra on Monday morning, ahead of all the other Regions, to afford the team 2 days of training on the artificial turf. Mr. David Sosu, coach of the Ashanti Regional team indicated in a telephone conversation that he intends to introduce his young talents to playing on the artificial turf before the commencement of the competition. Mr. Sosu emphasized that this move was his final preparations for the biggest domestic hockey showdown for the year 2002 which he was optimistic of winning to set the records straight as to the depth of hockey development in the Ashanti Region.
