NO Escape, owned by Mr Leslie Palm, emerged as one of Derby favourites when he put up a remarkable performance to win the “Chairman's Challenge Cup” at the Accra Race Course at the week-end, reports DAN RANA.
Ridden by former champion jockey R. Nettey, No Escape faced the starters with six other rivals in the nine-furlong for Third Division “A” “B” horses, the principal race on the fourth day of the Ga Homowo meeting.
It was all set by 5.15 p.m. with the large crowd poised to watch a thrilling finish. A few minutes later, they were off to a good start with Ameer setting the pace followed by No Escape, Royal Knight and Belle Fille.
After passing the Presidential Stand for the first time, it became evident that No Escape will be hard to beat despite the stern challenge offered by Belle Fille, Silverno and African Queen II.
As they ascended the Conference Centre hill, Nettey let off No Escapee who increased the speed to win with plenty to spare.
On behalf of the chairman of the Accra Turf Club, Nana Danso Ayeman who was bereaved and co uld not attend the meeting, a member of the Board of Stewards, Mrs Elizabeth Davis presented the magnificent “Chairman's Cup” to jockey R..
