Youth and Sports Minister, Mr Edward Osei-Kwaku, has praised the chiefs and people of Ahafo Ano for taking the initiative to construct a stadium for the citizens in the area.
He said that giant step has lessened government’s burden of bearing sole responsibility for the project which will be of great benefit for the entire country when completed.
Mr Osei-Kwaku made these remarks at a press briefing in Accra yesterday when the chief of Tepa, Nana Atwenewaa Ampem I and his elders called on him to solicit assistance from his ministry to enable them to complete the project. He expressed appreciation for the community’s effort and promised that the ministry will do everything possible to assist them to realise their dream. He noted that the meeting with the Tepa chief was the first of its kind since he assumed office and urged the Tepa Traditional Council to sit up to ensure the immediate completion of the project.
The minister also appealed to other traditional leaders to emulate the good example set by Nana Ampem I, since that will help accelerate government’s effort to develop sports facilities in the country. He promised the immediate erection of an inner perimeter and two goal posts on the field and urged them to make urgent moves to barricade the place to make it viable.
On his part, Nana Ampem I said it became necessary to seek support from the government due to the insufficient nature of the District Assembly Common Fund, which has been the source of finance for the job done so far.
He intimated that government’s assistance will promote and improve talents of the youth, which will be of great benefit to many individuals and teams around the community.
He emphasised that apart from the Kumasi Stadium and the Sunyani Coronation Park, there is no other better facility to be used in the area, but that notwithstanding, the youth from that community emerged victorious in the U-12 football competition last year. He presented a copy of the assembly’s programme for the entire project in which about 500 million has so far been spent on phase one.
