Former Hearts of Oak managing director, Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe is backing Black Stars head coach CK Akonnor to lead Ghana to Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph amidst doubt over the gaffer’s quality.

King Faisal owner Alhaji Karim Grusah in an interview with Kumasi FM in April insisted that although he believes Ghana will end the AFCON drought, he does not believe the current coach is the man to lead the Stars to the promised land.

Speaking on the claims in an interview with Class FM, Neil Armstrong has thrown his weight behind Coach CK Akonnor while indicating that the Black Stars head coach can guide the team to win the AFCON when provided with the necessary support.

“I disagree with Alhaji Grusah. Respectfully he is a mentor. Having said that you need to see the context in which he was speaking from. I haven’t monitored fully his justification for saying that we need to replace CK Akonnor,” the former Hearts of Oak managing director shared.

Neil Armstrong continued, “In terms of what I know about CK Akonnor, his background, his pedigree, his level of exposure and his application to his tasks if he gets the support from especially the playing body and the leadership of the playing body and utilizes his backroom staff, I don’t see why he cannot go on to lead us to win the Cup of African nations.”

Having qualified for the 2021 AFCON scheduled to be staged in Cameroon in January 2022, Ghana will hope to end an AFCON trophy drought dating back to four decades.

If no change is made, Coach CK Akonnor will be the coach for the side at the tournament.
