Maxwell Konadu was destined to fail at Kotoko - Coach JE Sarpong

Veteran Ghanaian coach, JE Sarpong beleives Maxwell Konadu's decision to return to Asante Kotoko was a wrong choice and was destined to fail.

Konadu, 48, was reappointed on December 9, 2019, replacing Kjetil Zachariassen.

However, due to poor outings in the ongoing 2020/21 Ghana Premier League, Konadu has been sacked by the management of Kotoko after their 1-0 defeat to Great Olympics.

According to Sarpong, who has coached Kotoko, Ebusua Dwarfs, Great Olympics and other clubs beleives Konadu's second return to the club was a wrong one and was destined to fail.

"I like Maxwell Konadu but his decision to return to Kotoko was a wrong one and was destined to fail," he told Accra based Asaase Radio.

"Second returns are always dangerous and it played a part in his sack. We saw Kwesi Appiah when he returned to the Black Stars as head coach. His performance was good but at the end, he was sacked and his contract was not renewed.

"I am worried about Kotoko at the moment because getting a coach to fix the situation will be an issue. I wish them the best of luck but this cannot keep happening," he added.

In July 2011, Konadu was appointed as assistant coach of Asante Kotoko, the club where he first gained fame as a prolific goal scorer.

He, however, signed on as head coach following his return from the All-Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique, following the sacking of Serbian coach Bogdan Korak.

On 5 June 2012, Konadu resigned as manager of Glo Premier League club Asante Kotoko after guiding the club to their 22nd league title and securing qualification to the 2013 CAF Champions League. Konadu was succeeded as manager of Asante Kotoko by, Mas-ud Didi Dramani.

Johnson Smith who was the assistant to Konadu has been named as the interim manager.
