Former Hearts of Oak forward, Bernard Dong Bortey has revealed that he could have played for Asante Kotoko during his playing days if not for a decision by the management of the Phobians to block his move.

The attacker in his prime was one of the most skilled players in the Ghana Premier League. While helping the capital-based club to lift a number of trophies, he also represented the Black Stars at some point.

Opening up on his career in an interview with Hot FM, Bernard Bortey says he almost joined Hearts of Oak’s bitterest rivals, Asante Kotoko.

“It was Hearts of oak management, the likes of the late president Atta mills, former Minister of sports ET Mensah, Dr. Harry Sawyer, and others that blocked me from playing for Kotoko. I was ready to play for Kotoko”, Bortey said.

The free-kick expert further disclosed, “Mr. Herbert Mensah just gave me an enticement fee of 500 old Ghana Cedis to convince me to play for Kotoko. I was ready to join the team because I was in Kumasi with Kwabena Yeboah, George Amoako, Dr. Amoah Bossompem, and Chairman Hebert Mensah.

“Kotoko captured me and I was ready to play for the fabulous team but Accra Hearts of oak grabbed me when I came to Accra to do outdooring of my new baby”.

Don Bortey spent close to a decade at Hearts of Oak before moving on to play for the likes of Aduana Stars, New Edubiase United, and some others.
