Asamoah Gyans Temper Cannot Be Tamed!
16.10.2020 LISTEN

Since I started watching football in the year 2000, Asamoah Gyan in my view has been the biggest household name in Ghana football for the last 2 decades. Asamoah Gyan is not just a Ghanaian brand who has made his name in Ghana’s sports scene but international football also. Gyan has played in four different countries including the world’s best and most covered league, the English Premier League.

Gyan started his career playing for Dansoman based Liberty Professional in 2003. He later he moved to Italian Club Udinese. Gyan made his international debut at the age of 17 just like the Brazilian great, Pele. It was against Somalia. Gyan found the back of the net in that game, and made himself the youngest ever player to score for Ghana.

In the 2010 FIFA World Cup his goal against United States of America, he helped Ghana reach in quarter-final and made his team third African team after Cameroon and Senegal in history to qualify the quarter-final of this prestigious world competition. Asamoah is the leading goal scorer for the Ghana Senior national team.

I got sadden today when news broke of him and his brother assaulting Mr. Godwin Martey, the CEO of Websoft Solutions. Mr. Martey on Joy FM’s super morning show said "Most of these controversial points that were in my favor, Baffour Gyan was giving the point to Asamoah Gyan. At a point, I became a bit uncomfortable with it. So there was a particular point that to me was obvious that the ball was good, and Baffour Gyan insisted that the point was for Asamoah Gyan”. “My friend shut up and stand there and play," he said were the words of Gyan. Then he came down and came to hit me that ‘my friend go there, I say go and play’. He was hitting me to go and play,” he added. A doctor reported has confirmed the assault.

Surfing internet commentary and juxtaposing that with history of Gyan off the pitch, I feel Mr. Gyan lacks proper management that is required for a huge star like him. At this height of career and prominence, Gyan in my view needs the topmost professionals in player management to handle his brand and person. This is a player with so many records under his belt. However, there are many unfortunate off the pitch incidents that need to wake up the management of Asamoah Gyan.

As then captain of the Black Stars in 2014, Asamoah and his brother, Baffour Gyan assaulted an Ashanti Regional correspondent of the Daily Graphic, Mr. Daniel Kenu at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Gyan and his brother were reported to have also assaulted a trotro mate at Bonsu in the Eastern region. The current one is that of Mr. Martey.

These reported incidents may come back to haunt the brand Asamoah Gyan. Gyan is a national asset. Gyan has several investments that employed many people. He is a global idol worshipped across the globe. His management, especially his big brother shouldn’t lose sight of that. Anything Gyan says or touches is news and therefore, he must be managed with professionalism, tact and finesse. These incidents do not just get reported in the local press, international press carries this news too. Gyan should have a re-look of his temper and reactions before it brings him down from his acme.
