Former goalkeeper, Richard Kingson has waded into the Black Stars captaincy fracas.

The Black Stars captaincy has been a major topical for the past two and a half decades as to who deserves to lead the team ahead of tournament.

The former Blackpool and Birmingham goalkeeper who captained the senior national team in the 2010 AFCON tournament says the captain armband is just a differentiation from one player to the other and the captains do not receive more money than any other player in the team.

“Sometimes I feel bad and I say ‘why are you fighting on this?’ It is just to differentiate you from us. It is the performance that matters. You can be the captain and sit on the bench," he told Joy Sports.

"With this captain’s armband, you don’t take more than anybody [in the Black Stars] in terms of salary and winning bonus. I don’t see the reason why people fight over it. It causes destruction.”

He was asked about how Stephen Appiah got the captaincy even when he was the senior player and he revealed that he offered his support to the former Juventus man.

“We were having a meeting and Appiah was called as a captain and he got up and told them that, I should be the captain because I was the most senior player and I tapped him and said that I will support him,” he added.
