Tough-talking Asamoah Gyan says he is sure Kwesi Appiah has regretted stripping off the Black Stars captaincy ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Gyan believes the former Black Stars coach regrets the decision despite applauding his successor Andre Ayew for his leadership qualities.

“I am very sure he (Kwesi Appiah) regrets making that decision, I know he has regrets and believes he made the wrong decision,” Gyan told GTV Sport Plus.

“No disrespect to Andre, he is a wonderful leader and a motivator. But I feel the timing was wrong and I know he (Kwesi Appiah) regrets though we haven’t spoken since," he added.

The decision to take away the captaincy from Gyan was heavily criticised by a wide section of the media, insisting the timing was wrong. Appiah made the decision just two weeks before the team's camping in Dubai.

This is believed to have led to a frosty relationship between Appiah and Gyan.

“I don’t remember the last time I spoke to him since the Cup of Nations tournament there hasn’t been any contacts. But personally I feel he regrets his decision,” says the 34-year old.

The former Liberty Professionals and Sunderland forward lost his captaincy to Andre Ayew with less than two months for the start of the tournament in Egypt.

Gyan retired prematurely from the national team but rescinded his decision after a presidential intervention.
