29-year-old Laura Oden is blonde and buxom; the perfect recipe for working at a lingerie company, right? Wrong, according to her employers, Native Intimates, a New York lingerie company owned by Orthodox Jews.

Orthodox Jews practice a stricter form of Judaism. There are degrees of “orthodoxy” with some shunning modern society altogether, while others limit their interaction to the modern world strictly to trade. In general, they are traditionally more conservative than non-orthodox Jews.

Oden, a New Jersey native was at the job for only a few days when her supervisor began questioning her dressing, saying that it was inappropriate for the workplace. Oden says, “We should not be judged by the size of our breasts or the shape of our body.” Apparently, she doesn't understand the way the world has worked for eons.

She was eventually fired over the phone while she was out shopping for the very clothing the company had asked her to wear.

Odes said that on successive days during her week-long employment in late April she was warned that her attire was too alluring, that her breasts should be taped down to make them look smaller, and that she was asked to wear a red bathrobe to cover one outfit.

“This whole experience has been horrifying to me,” she told reporters. “I love fashion and I always will, but I don't believe any woman should be treated as I was.”

Odes, whose said her duties included data entry and coordinating the shipping of samples to customers, said she eventually agreed to purchase a sweater to wear over her dress, but was dismissed anyway.

“I understand that there are Orthodox Jewish men who may have their views about how a woman should dress … but I do not feel that any employer has the right to impose their religious beliefs on me,” she said.

She was fired while out shopping for new clothes, said Oden. She had been working there for just about a week. Oden is being represented by Gloria Allred, the lawyer famous for representing another woman who was “too beautiful” for her banking workplace. It's tough being beautiful in this world, you know?
