Thousands of Catholics, including Cardinals and Bishops from Ghana and other countries, are expected in Kumasi on Tuesday to participate in an open-air burial mass for the 34 members of the Abuakwa Parish of the Catholic Church who perished in the fatal accident at Akropong Junction.

The mass, sanctioned by the Vatican, will be held on the Abuakwa Catholic School Park. A spokesman of the church told the Daily Graphic in Kumasi that interment of the deceased would take place at Abuakwa and other surrounding towns where the victims hailed from.

In all, 36 people were killed in the accident involving a 207 Mercedes Benz bus and an InterCity STC bus. The two other persons who died in the accident were on the STC bus.

He said intensive preparations were under way to give the deceased a fitting funeral in line with Catholicism.
The spokesman said the whole Catholic community had been shattered by the accident and explained that that was why the Pope had taken a keen interest in the funeral.

The Abuakwa area continues to be in a state of mourning.
The accident occurred last Monday night when the church members in the 207 Benz Bus were on their way to attend the wake of a parish priest who was also killed in a motor accident.

The driver of the 207 bus, who was also a member of the church, was overtaking a Tico taxi when it collided with the STC bus, which was on its way to Accra from Burkina Faso.
