The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commended organizers of yesterday's demonstration against recent fuel price hikes.

The police say the committee for joint action, which organized the protest march, did very well to control the demonstrators. Ashanti Regional Police Commander, ACP Adu Poku, says he appreciates the comportment of the demonstrators.

“So far, I enjoyed the co-operation of the directors. Everything had gone smoothly and peacefully. We didn't want to take things for granted.”

“Much as the demonstrators have the constitutional right to demonstrate, we on our part as police officers have the constitutional right to maintain law and order”.

The demonstration in Kumasi was one of what was supposed to be simultaneous protests in four towns.

The three others didn't take place in Accra, Techiman and Tamale. The Accra and Techiman demonstrations were postponed because of the observance of certain traditional rites.

But the one in Tamale was stopped by a court order. Despite the setbacks, the CJA says it will continue to urge people to take to the streets until government shows concern and reverses the fuel price increases. Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan is a member of the committee.

“If you don't listen, we will also not rest on our oars because we believe the average Ghanaian is really in difficulty as far as the way they are managing the condition is concerned. So we will continue to get their attention and they can be there always, he said.”
