Uniting To Achieve The Impossible

Feature Article Uniting To Achieve The Impossible
MAR 8, 2020 LISTEN

“But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the men were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”” (Genesis 11: 5-7 NIV).

The statement above was God’s reaction to human creativity exhibited with bad motives. Sometime during the period after the flood in Noah’s days, but before the call of Abraham, the people of the world had one language, and they decided to build a city with a tower, the Tower of Babel, to reach the heavens, make a name for themselves, and avoid being scattered on earth. God was not happy with their building and motives. God confused their language so they could not understand each other, which stopped the construction projects, and scattered the people on earth (Genesis 11:1-9).

The focus of this article is on how uniting as one people can help us to achieve the impossible, and how confusion can prevent us from achieving our goals. The people who constructed the Tower of Babel used bricks and then tar as mortar. Building technology has improved considerably since then. Today, the invention and production of steel and other materials in large quantities have made possible the construction of skyscrapers and other buildings with heights that would confound the imagination of the architects and builders of the Tower of Babel. For example, the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, completed in 2010, has 163 floors with a total height of 2717 feet or 828 metres.

We are still going up and up. We have gone way higher than where the tallest conceivable building can take us. Aircrafts of various dimensions are able to soar in the sky far beyond our imagination. And rockets are able to propel people into space, to as far as the moon.

These advances in science and technology are made possible, in part, by people uniting behind their governments as citizens to provide public goods and behind organizations to achieve profits and other goals. For example, people who come together as shareholders of profit organizations or as founders of non-profit organizations, or similar collective arrangements, achieve much more than those who act alone. Indeed, as the Bible says, if we unite as one people speaking one language, nothing we plan to do will be impossible for us. `

The heights that have been achieved in physical structures and other areas, can be surpassed in the spiritual world if we unite as one people. Christians and the Church should take seriously Jesus’ desire that we come together as one in order to advance the Kingdom of God. The model that Christ prays for us to achieve is oneness or unity, just as he and the Father are one (see John 17:20-23). Jesus also says, "Again I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:19-20 NIV). We can achieve the impossible if we unite and pray for our common good. We need to unite and press on the upward way, conquering new heights in our spiritual lives, getting closer to God, and advancing His Kingdom on earth.

As expected, the devil has a different plan concerning our spiritual upward mobility. The devil knows that one effective method to prevent people from uniting is to create confusion among them. That fact was revealed by God in the Genesis passage quoted above. We may be speaking the same language, but talking past each other without listening to or understanding what the other person has to say. We may even see the wisdom in, or truth of, what a person is saying, but stubbornly refuse to understand or agree with the person.

How may the devil use that to prevent Christians from coming together as one? That would happen if, for example, Churches are established based on questionable foundations - foundations that are similar to the foundations of the Tower of Babel. One of the motivational foundations for the Tower of Babel was the desire of the people to make a name for themselves. Therefore, watch out for any Church that was established around a cult of personality of one individual who wants to make a name for himself or herself. A Church like that is less likely to unite with the larger body of Christ to achieve a common purpose for the good of the Kingdom.

The weapon of confusion is real and powerful. That is why the devil has planted the spirit of confusion among some Christians such that even though we may sing “The Church’s One Foundation,” we fail to understand that the foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord. We fail to understand that Jesus Christ is the cornerstone as well as every other stone of our Church foundation so we should not be carried away by any passing wind disguised as Christian doctrine.

The Apostle Paul was emphatic about this. Sensing that the Church at Galatia had been thrown into confusion, Paul wrote to them in the strongest possible language saying, “but even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!” (Galatians 1:8 NIV). What Christians and others need to know about God is contained in the Bible, which is the Word of God. Read it, study it, meditate on it, pray about it, and God will direct your path to know the truth, and the truth shall set you free from the manipulations of the devil.

God has revealed to us that if we unite as one people speaking one language, nothing we plan to do – good or evil - will be impossible for us. Let’s choose to unite for the good of the Kingdom. Let’s speak one language - the language of our Lord Jesus Christ - contained in the Bible and follow Christ’s teachings. God has also revealed that confusion within and among us can frustrate or derail our plans and make what is possible seem impossible to achieve. We need to be on guard and come together because in unity lies strength.

Prayer is the key. May God grant us the grace to seek Him daily through our prayers.
