The Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly says it has set up a Youth Parliament which they believe will groom young man and women in local governance and help bring development in the various communities.

According to the Assembly, the move will also motive and create a platform for the youth to affiliate themselves in political engagements in the Municipality.

Addressing the media, Acting Youth Officer, Mustapha Campbell said "For some time now, the youths in the country have been abandoned in local governance and decision making. The setting up of Youth Parliament will give them some zeal and encouragement to take up roles which will groom them in becoming responsible in the Municipality and Society"

He added that lots of decisions being taken by leaders in Ghana's Chamber concern the youth but these young ones are not given the chance to share their thoughts.

Mr Campbell says he is confident that the new Youth Parliament will also help teach and train the young ones the need to abstain from drug abuse.

"The Youth Parliament is on theme 'The role of the youth in eliminating drug abuse in the Municipality. I believe we will go far and bring change in the lives of the youth in our Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly"

Coordinator at the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly, Kofi Boateng Acheampong lauded the youth for setting up a Parliament and encouraged them to manage it well.

He said "This is one of the beautiful things I have seen the youth in Ayawaso Central come up with. If they manage it well, it will be worth emulating for others"

Mr. Acheampong also noted that Youth Parliament will help boost and build the confidence of the young men and women in local governance.

He used the occasion to advise the youth to stay away from drug abuse adding that it will not only affect the health but their future.

Background

The Youth Parliament is an initiative by the National Youth Authority(NYA). Since NYA's mandate is to provide a relevant and conducive environment that defines and supports the implementation of effective frontline youth empowerment practices, the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly believes it focusing on young people’s participation in socio-economic and political development will help facilitate private and third sector provider investments in youth empowerment.
